NZWG does not support the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate stories for screen
Why?
Because copyright cannot be applied when a story is generated through any form of Large Language Model (LLM).
LLMs are trained using stolen copywritten materials, and LLMs continue to learn from user generated inputs which means neither copyright nor originality can be guaranteed on stories generated using AI.
Meaning, the use of AI when generating any story for screen makes copyright void.
For screenwriters, and their producing partners, this means that scripts, treatments, loglines, synopsis and any writing that requires proof of copyright cannot use any form of AI. Because it will have trouble receiving funding, as copyright cannot be proven.
Copyright is the basis of a successful screenwriting career. Without this right, writers cannot make a living from their works!
As AI evolves so do the tools for detecting AI use within written works. NZWG is already utilising these tools.
NZWG does support the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating better productivity for the screen sector
Why?
Because productivity isn't copyright dependent.
NZWG support the screen sector to utilise the tools available to assist within productions, for example: schedules, budgets, finance planning, logistics, and non-creative application writing, and any other use that supports productivity. Just make sure you are double checking the AI tool for factual accuracies.
We support tools that create better equity, access, and productivity without losing your rights and ability to earn from your creations!
