In January 2025, NZWG will be launching the full AI Advice: Handbook for Screenwriters

NZWG still states that AI is good for productivity and bad for creativity. Copyright is a human right, and screenwriters depend on securing copyright in their works for a sustainable career in the screen industry.

In January 2025, NZWG will be launching the full AI Advice Handbook for Screenwriters

NZWG still states that AI is good for productivity and bad for creativity. Copyright is a human right, and screenwriters depend on securing copyright in their works for a sustainable career in the screen industry.

Current NZWG statement on AI (until the Handbook is released):

NZWG does not support the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate stories for screen: AKA creativity

Why?

Because copyright cannot be guaranteed when a story is generated through any form of Large Language Model (LLM).

LLMs are trained using stolen copywritten materials, and LLMs continue to learn from user generated inputs which means neither copyright nor originality can be guaranteed on stories generated using AI.

Copyright is the basis of a successful screenwriting career. Without this right, writers cannot make a living from their works!

As AI evolves so do the tools for detecting AI use within written works. NZWG is already utilising these tools.

NZWG does support the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating better productivity for the screen sector: AKA productivity

Why?

Because productivity isn't copyright dependent.

NZWG support screenwriters and the wider screen sector to utilise the tools available to assist within productions, for example: schedules, budgets, finance planning, logistics, and non-creative application writing, and any other use that supports productivity.

We support tools that create better equity, access, and productivity without losing your rights and ability to earn from your creations!
